The Artist's Voice: Lake Tahoe/Truckee
October 6-11, 2019

"Storytelling and the Power of Awe."

What is "The Artist's Voice"?
It's a photography retreat.
It's an awesome adventure.
It's how we roll, baby.

I know that YOU, my friend, are itching for a way to connect photographic technique with your artistic, expressive voice inside - and deftly weave it into the pixels of your images.

You crave that leap from "Pretty darn good"  to "OMG!!" photos. You want to tell visual stories; share a  feeling, an emotion, inspire people with your art.
You want it to be fun. Delicious.  A whole-body experience worth singing about.

And let's be honest. It's about the story you want to tell.
It's about the way you want to feel: Awestruck, creative, wrapped up in nature  as it whispers possibilities to you; inviting to reach further than you ever have before.  Creativity on a whole new level.

You know it's true...

The time is NOW! An artistic adventure of a lifetime beckons...

Arrival and check-in at Cedar House Sport Hotel, followed by a  warm welcome orientation and introductions, as well as a short confab to learn how the week will unfold day-by-day.

Tip: Your week is a story; you'll be telling it in your signature voice, through images and words.

After that we head to our dinner location! Along the way, we'll stop for a "Seeking Awe and Art"
 photo warm up,
cameras in-hand. Then on to our wonderful group welcome dinner,
 which  wraps up Day 1.

Day 2 - Monday, October 7th: TRUCKEE & LAKE TAHOE
(Breakfast at Cedar House and picnic dinner at Tahoe included)

Tip: Each day has a theme and exercises that help you build your visual storytelling.

We begin Day 2 with a sunrise photo shoot from a mountaintop near Cedar House, followed by a hot breakfast back at inn. After a short break, we'll dive into a morning clinic/classroom session which will bring us to lunch.

After our lunch break, we head out to Lake Tahoe for lovely afternoon walk along the shoreline, discovering secret nooks and beaches along the way. You'll have plenty of time to explore, work on your photo projects, ask questions and bask in the mountain air by the lake. Enjoy a sunset photo shoot at one of our favorite spots, followed by a yummy gourmet picnic dinner on the beach before you head back to Cedar House and fall into bed for a well-deserved good night's sleep.

Day 3 - Tuesday, October 8th: TRUCKEE
(Breakfast at Cedar House & dinner out included)

Day 3 kicks off with breakfast and a morning session at Cedar House. Then we head into Historic Downtown Truckee for a fun photo team project  (a fan favorite!). It's all part of the photo series you'll be building around your Story of Awe.

We'll have lunch together at a wonderful restaurant in Truckee,  who sources most of the their food locally. Then we'll return back to Cedar House and take a break before spending our afternoon shooting behind-the-scenes at one of our renowned  local artisan breweries. We'll enjoy dinner together before heading back to Cedar House after this full day.  Get some sleep because...

Day 4 - Wednesday, October 9th: LAKE TAHOE
(Breakfast & picnic lunch included; dinner on your own)

Early riser alert! This is our incredible Lake Tahoe sunrise shoot!  But hey, don't worry; breakfast sandwiches and copious amounts of morning coffee - or tea, if you prefer - will all be at hand. Following sunrise, we'll have loads of Tahoe photo opps, with some pretty cool surprises along the way.
(What are they? Oh, we can't tell you that -  or they wouldn't be surprises, now would they?
Suffice it to say that many socks were blown off at last year's retreat on this retreat day.)

We'll celebrate an amazing morning  together with a gourmet picnic lunch on the shore of Lake Tahoe, then it's back to Cedar House, full of stories to tell.

Afternoon session, followed by dinner on your own  or with new friends to work on projects, hang out,
edit photos or just take a long, slow breath!

Day 5 - Thursday, October 10th: TRUCKEE
 (Breakfast at Cedar House included)

On our last full day together, we end where we began; upon a mountaintop in Truckee. We have an easy hike; to breathe - and to experience wild nature and the Awe that she brings. Spending time on a mountain is like food for the soul. With a rich variety of natural features, elements, textures and experiences to photograph, you'll wrap the day's shoot feeling fuller and more at peace on your insides.

We'll make our leisurely return back to Cedar House for lunch,  followed by time to work on photos and dive into final presentations over wine and cheese. Who doesn't love a good share over wine? This part is one of our faves!

Dinner will be on your own... but most love the chance to hang out, catch any last-minute shots they might have missed, or simply bask in the glow of an amazing week.

Love for "The Artists' Voice'"...

"I feel like I'm coming back a different photographer... A serious introspective look into the soul, and how you bring that out in your photography.."  -- Mike Roberts

"Usually when I get back from a trip I feel stressed, tired, need to recoup and get back to reality.
This time I was completely relaxed and it was easy; no stress and no post trip depression.
Just amazing memories, photographs, new tools and a renewed outlook on life.
Thank you!" — Lauri Novak

WAY blew out all expectations & then alot more on top.

I'd say if you really want to get more enjoyment out of your hobby or pro photography, you must take this amazing retreat with Karen! And may I add... Patty and KHutt make THE best team - every need covered and awesome surprises to boot.
-- Tom Buerghi

I have always loved Karen's art and to get to learn from her, was the best.

On a personal level, I needed something positive to force a turnabout in my life.
My artistic goal was to channel my vulnerabilities into a new way of seeing and creating with my camera.

The retreat accomplished both goals and I gained some valuable friends in the process and so much more.

My favorite images all had something in common: a memorizing feeling that captivated me when I set sight on it. Those images were truly special (my best). It was as if my personal feelings were somehow imbedded into the metadata of those images.  Karen gave me the tools to learn to use  find 'my voice’ and to create with that voice. -- Barb Cochran

Sometimes I overthink shots. Your approach taught me to appreciate right where I am in the moment. This helped me calm my thoughts about theory and the technical aspect of my shot and instead focus on form, movement and flow in my frame.

From now on, regardless of what or where I am photographing, I am going to ground myself before looking through the view finder.
I now know that this will make me much more aware of my surroundings and will lead to much better images in the end.

BTW:  Partnering with Patty was a great fit! She went above and beyond to make our stay such a wonderful experience.
-- Elizabeth Gray

"Having met Karen and knowing who she drew me in first. I love what Karen speaks about in her own work. I like that her work comes from a place of centered knowing.

The best part: I absolutely found the next level of my artistic voice!" — Elle Bruce

This was not a tourist excursion. We visited beautiful, inspiring locations that were not on the typical tourist map! I am in a place in my photography where it is ok for me to pay attention to what others are shooting and why; but it is also imperative that I find what makes me tick, as well. Because of Karen's approach, I was able to find the right balance for me.

To anyone reading this, I can only say:  Go! Get inspired by beautiful people with a profound message.

To Karen: thanks for the life-changing experience and for inspiring me to do more!
--Dottie Larson

I felt warm, I felt invited and I felt like I could just be me… which made me feel like I could open up and believe that I could find my voice. -- Debra Tufts

"I spent 8 glorious days on the French Riviera with Karen Hutton. 'Finding Your Artistic Voice' is more then what the title suggests. It is learning who you really are, what speaks to you as an artist, learning to articulate it as your voice. The inner radiant fire.

I made some amazing friends, danced along the boardwalk in Cannes, laughed until I cried and found myself in so many ways."
-- Jennifer Walton

Playing during the Retreat included: trying to capture what I felt and what I love through my lens, learning photo blurring, doing a little dance, singing a little song, drinking a little Prosecco ;)

Through all of this, I reclaimed parts of me and found pure joy and freedom in just being me again. This was all possible because each of you were willing to fully show up and be vulnerable and open as well...and together we created connection...a connection, I believe, that inspires us to step more fully into ourselves.

I can't think of a better way to foster creativity than through the beauty of connection--with one's self, one's environment, and others.

These moments will stay with me forever. ❤️
